What we do

  • Repairs: thermostats, elements, gas controls and regulators, pilot and ignition faults, relief valves and leaking tanks.
  • Replacements: like-for-like changeovers, or a change to a different type when it suits the house better.
  • Gas hot water: storage and continuous-flow (instantaneous) units on LPG, including regulator and gas line work, done under the same visit by a licensed gasfitter.
  • Relocations: moving a unit to a better spot, for example out of salt spray, closer to the bathroom or to free up space during a renovation.

Repair or replace?

Most storage tanks give 8–12 years of service, depending on water quality, maintenance and where the unit sits. As a rough guide:

  • Repair when the tank itself is sound and the fault is a part: a thermostat, element, valve, gas control or regulator.
  • Replace when the tank is leaking from the body, it is near the end of its life, or the repair would cost a large share of a new unit.

You'll get a straight answer on which makes sense before anything is done.

Queensland rules that apply to your hot water

  • 60 °C storedStored water must be heated to at least 60 °C to control Legionella.
  • 50 °C at the tapBathroom basins, baths and showers must be supplied at no more than 50 °C.
  • Tempering valveRequired whenever a water heater is replaced, even like-for-like.
  • Licensed workInstalling or replacing a water heater is notifiable work, lodged with the QBCC by your plumber.

Water at 60 °C can cause a serious burn in about a second, which is why the tempering valve matters, especially with young children or older family members in the house. Kitchens and laundries can still run hotter.

Coast, hinterland and Gympie: what wears hot water units out

  • Salt air on the coast. Units close to the beach corrode faster. Manufacturer warranties generally exclude corrosion from harsh conditions, so placement and a yearly check pay off.
  • Soft water. Unitywater's supply on the Sunshine Coast and Noosa is soft (around 61 mg/L hardness in 2024–25). Soft water is gentle on elements but can be harder on the sacrificial anode, so checking the anode helps a tank last.
  • Hard bore water. Some rural and Gympie-region bores are much harder, which builds scale on elements and valves.
  • LPG supply. Most homes here run gas hot water on LPG bottles or a bulk tank. A tired regulator is a common cause of weak or no hot water.

Thinking about a heat pump or solar?

Heat pump and solar water heaters can cut the running cost of hot water, which is around a quarter of a Queensland home's electricity use. A few points worth knowing:

  • There is no Queensland government hot water rebate open at the moment. The last one (Climate Smart Energy Savers) closed in 2024.
  • The federal small-scale technology certificate (STC) discount still applies at the point of sale, but it shrinks each year until the scheme ends in 2030.
  • Energex economy tariffs (Tariff 31 and 33) can lower the cost of running an electric or heat pump unit.

Common questions

Why do I have cold water but no hot water?

On an electric unit it is usually the thermostat, element or a tripped safety switch. On a gas unit, check the gas bottle first, then the pilot or ignition. A failing regulator is common on LPG. If the tank is leaking or the relief valve is pouring water, turn the unit off and call.

Do I need a tempering valve on a replacement hot water system?

Yes. In Queensland a temperature control device is required when a water heater is replaced, including like-for-like, so bathroom fixtures get water at no more than 50 °C.

How long does a hot water system last?

Most storage tanks last around 8–12 years. Water quality, salt air, how hard the unit works and whether the anode has been checked all make a difference.

Can you replace my hot water system on the same day?

Often, yes, when the right unit is available from local suppliers. Call to check what can be done for your house.

Is there a rebate for a heat pump hot water system in Queensland?

No state rebate is open at the moment. The federal STC discount still applies at purchase and reduces each year until 2030.
