Plumber and gasfitter in Yandina, North Arm and Ninderry
Yandina is about 13 km by road from Clayton’s base in Bli Bli, so the town and the farms around it are local work. Jobs here range from heritage-era timber houses in the old town to new homes on the edge of town and acreage on tank water and septic.
Unitywater supplies Yandina from three dams on the South Maroochy River, Cooloolabin, Poona and Wappa, through the Image Flat treatment plant. Wappa Dam sits in neighbouring Kiamba and was finished in 1963. Cooloolabin Dam, west of town, followed in 1979.
One thing sets Yandina apart from most of the coast: it is not connected to Seqwater’s SEQ Water Grid. Unitywater says Yandina can only receive water treated at Image Flat, while other areas can also draw on other dams through the grid.
If the whole street loses pressure, check Unitywater’s outages page before calling anyone. If it’s only your house, the usual suspects in an older Yandina home are a corroded galvanised pipe, a blocked tap aerator, a failing pressure-limiting valve or a hidden leak. See leak detection.
An 1870s town that is growing fast
Yandina was surveyed in 1870, the first gazetted town in the Maroochy district, and the railway arrived in 1891. Koongalba, the timber house built for John Low at 12 Wharf Street in 1894, is on the Queensland Heritage Register, and the streets around Stevens Street keep much of the old town’s character.
The town is also growing. The census counted 2,371 people in 2016 and 3,073 in 2021. Most occupied homes (83%) are separate houses, and about a quarter are rented.
Older houses: galvanised water pipe and clay sewer lines are typical of their era, which means corrosion, low pressure and root-affected drains. See blocked drains.
Newer houses: first hot water replacements, extra garden taps and gas BBQ points.
Rentals: access can be arranged through your property manager, with the price agreed before work starts.
Businesses: Yandina is a rural and light-industrial town, home to the Ginger Factory since 1980, so workshops and shops need plumbing too.
When the Maroochy floods
The North and South Maroochy rivers join just downstream of Yandina, and the Bureau of Meteorology lists Yandina and Kiamba among the hinterland areas at risk of flash flooding. The Yandina river gauge peaked at 5.15 m in June 1983 and 4.52 m in February 2022.
Once the water goes down:
Queensland Government advice is that gas installations and appliances must be inspected by a licensed gasfitter before they are used again. Don’t remove or repair gas pipework yourself during the clean-up.
Damaged or lost LPG cylinders go back to your gas supplier, not in the bin.
Silt settles in gully traps, stormwater pits and sewer lines, so drains that are slow after a flood need clearing.
A hot water system that has been under water needs checking before use. An electric unit also needs an electrician.
The country changes quickly outside town. Sugar cane was grown at North Arm for about a century after 1886, and the North Maroochy River runs through it. Ninderry is mostly rural residential, below 312 m Mount Ninderry. In the Maroochy River locality, the river flats are farmed and the houses sit on the hillsides. Bridges, Kiamba and Cooloolabin are small rural localities out toward the dams.
Many of these properties run on rainwater tanks with a pressure pump, use LPG for cooking and hot water, and have a septic tank or treatment plant. Common work includes:
Pressure pumps, pressure tanks and filters
Gas bottle regulators and automatic changeover valves
Long water and gas lines out to sheds, granny flats and second dwellings
Plumbing for septic and treatment plant upgrades, which need a council plumbing permit
Suburbs and towns covered
Yandina, North Arm, Ninderry, Yandina Creek, Bridges, Maroochy River, Kiamba, Cooloolabin and nearby (postcodes 4561, 4560).

We have used Cassels Plumbing for a number of years. Clayton has done the Plumbing in our bathroom renovations & replaced our gas hot water system.
No. Unitywater says Yandina is not connected to the SEQ Water Grid. It only receives water treated at Image Flat, which comes from the Cooloolabin, Poona and Wappa dams.
Our gas hot water went under in the flood. Can we just relight it?
No. Queensland Government advice is that gas installations and appliances must be inspected by a licensed gasfitter before they are used after a flood. Clayton holds gas licence LIC-GWL-019585 and can inspect and repair the system.
Why is the water pressure low in our old Yandina house?
Common causes are corroded galvanised pipe, a blocked tap aerator, a failing pressure-limiting valve or a leak. If the whole street is affected, check Unitywater’s outages page first.
